Tomorrow, the Navarrese classic dedicated to Miguel Indurain

Gran Premio Indurain (1.PRO)
Estella - Lizarra (203,9 km)
Saturday 5th April

A short break from the Italian calendar for Team Polti VisitMalta, which will be in Spain tomorrow for the Navarrese classic named after the greatest Navarrese cyclist of all time: the Gran Premio Indurain. Over two hundred kilometers long, this race will challenge both the legs and the minds of the riders. The start and finish will take place in the city known as Estella in Castilian and Lizarra in Basque. For the third consecutive year, the race will be decided by two sequences of walls: Alto de Eraul, de Muru, de Ibarra, interspersed with Alto Guirguillano, de Lezaun, de Irache.

Such a demanding course requires a mix of climbers: pure ones like Fernando Tercero, Davide Bais and Alex Martín, alongside rouleurs such as Gabriele Raccagni, Alessandro Tonelli (coming from Settimana Coppi e Bartali) and Samuele Zoccarato, fresh from The Hills gravel race. “I’m returning to racing after more than a month,” says Tercero, “and I have good feelings both about myself and my teammates. It will be a tough challenge, especially if it rains, and positioning before the final climbs will be crucial.”

Sports director Jesús Hernández: “As always we expect a big selection in the second part, especially since many squads will be fighting for valuable points. Half of the teams are from the World Tour, but we want to be in the mix as well. Our riders are in the right condition to hold on and fight until the end.”
