Germán Gómez in the breakaway in the fourth Stage of Coppi e Bartali

Settimana Coppi e Bartali (2.1)
Stage 4: Monticino – Brisighella (150,4 km)

Yesterday a puncture had stopped him, but today Germán Gómez was able to join the breakaway in the penultimate stage of the Settimana Coppi e Bartali: 130 kilometers alongside 13 other riders. A move that started and ended at the same point: the foot of the Monticino, at the first and final ascents. When this leading group was caught three men counterattacked, but a chase led also by Alessandro Tonelli helped reel them in on the Rio Chiè wall, 5 km from the finish.

At the same moment the top GC contenders attacked, with Tulett (Visma) winning and becoming the new leader of the race. For Team Polti VisitMalta the best-placed rider, who stayed well-hidden and protected in the main peloton, was Mattia Bais: 24th place in the stage and 15th overall.

Gómez: “On a demanding course, as always in Coppi e Bartali, we knew it could be a good day for the escapees and I didn’t let the opportunity slip by. In the final part the stronger riders moved because the gaps in the classification were small, so there wasn’t much we could do, but I’m very happy to have felt good legs the whole time and to have raced with such good spirit.”

Sports Director Jesús Hernández: “Our guys were ready at every stage of the race, I’m proud of how each one is dedicated to their role and we’re looking forward to tomorrow’s three ascents to the Rocca delle Caminate.”
