Fourth road stage of the Giro, fourth breakaway for Team Polti VisitMalta: this time it’s Davide Bais

Giro d’Italia (2.UWT)
Stage 5: Ceglie Messapica - Matera (151 km)

Team Polti VisitMalta spent 138 kilometers in the breakaway during Stage 5 of the Giro d’Italia, the fourth road stage. This time it was Davide Bais who jumped clear right from the start and, unlike Fran Muñoz (who today raced wearing both the blue Red Bull KM bib number and the red one for combativity) he found some allies. The rider from Trentino region worked well with Epis (Arkea) and Milesi (Movistar) from the Murge plateau to the Lucanian city of the famous Sassi. Their move was tightly controlled by the maglia rosa Pedersen’s squad, but thanks to grit and determination it lasted until 13 km to go. In a twisting, undulating finale where half Polti VisitMalta fought to stay in the main peloton, Davide Piganzoli finished safely avoiding any risks.

Davide Bais: “It was my turn to get into the break, and I made it! With 40 km to go I pushed again and only Milesi came with me – I’m happy we managed to go that far. I’m now second in the breakaway classification, behind my teammate Alessandro Tonelli, and you’ll definitely see me attacking again soon.”

Sports Director Stefano Zanatta: “All the guys approached the race with the right mindset. In addition to Bais’ long breakaway, everyone showed strong legs and the will to make an impact. We avoided splits and tomorrow we’ll be back to working for Giovanni Lonardi ahead of the sprint in Naples.”
