Piganzoli 4th on the Tour of the Alps’ longest day

The second stage of the Tour of the Alps took riders from Trentino region to Südtirol. After twenty flat kilometers, the remaining 158 featured relentless ups and downs and began to create gaps among the GC contenders: Davide Piganzoli stepped up and broke into the top 10, narrowly missing the podium!
Team Polti VisitMalta rode with the right approach — first helping to reel in a breakaway trio and then supporting its talented climber over the final walls. When Storer (Tudor) attacked in Telves wall with 12 km to go and went on to take the stage win and provisional lead, Piganzoli was part of the nine-rider chase group behind. He finished 4th in the sprint and now sits 9th in the GC and 3rd in the young rider classification.
“We faced steep roads and technical descents, showin improving form” he said. “I’m happy with how my body responded after three weeks on Teide. I care a lot about this race full of climbing — we’ll take it day by day.”
Sports director Stefano Zanatta: “When we saw that only few riders got away and Lidl Trek immediately began chasing hard, we understood it would be better to stay compact and wait for the finale. There our Piga rewarded his teammates’ efforts with his trademark determination. Seeing him battle evenly with the strongest opponents gives us great confidence for the next three days.”
